They are visible if the sunlight does not interfere. When objects illuminated by the Sun are in the field of view of the observer or the camera, the eyes or the camera adapt to these bright sources and the rest of the luminaries become invisible.
But when the space station flies from the night side of the Earth, the stars are clearly visible from it to the naked eye.
