Why is fluffy ball not played anywhere except tennis?
First, it has always been like this. Back in the 16th-17th centuries, they played with balls of wool wrapped in leather, fabric, animal skins. So the tennis ball has never been perfectly smooth.
But the tradition also has a functional side: the pile of a tennis ball creates traction with the strings of a racket - a smooth ball would slide along smooth strings and would be almost uncontrollable. If it was still smooth, it would fly off the court more often, it would be more difficult for the player to set the direction, and the opponent would have less time to react.
There were cases when tennis players deliberately fluffed balls on a racket at matches.
