Where did the custom of doing manicures come from?
In ancient Greece, there was a position of "cosmetologist". As you might guess, this word comes from the same root "cosmos", which is translated from Greek as "order". Therefore, well-groomed nails are a step towards harmony.
Beauticians were slaves, and their duties included bathing Greek citizens in special baths with aromatic oils, giving them massages, applying make-up and a special “nail polish” consisting of animal fat and blood. The same was done by cosmetologists in ancient Rome in the 2nd century BC.
It is believed that lacquer was invented in ancient China in the 30th century BC. They covered the long nails of monarchs and people belonging to the upper classes. And during the Ming Dynasty, already in the XIV century AD, women grew their nails up to 25 cm to ward off evil spirits. Long and well-groomed nails for women were considered a kind of amulet from evil, and for men - a sign of masculinity.
