Why is it said that there are always ten slices in an orange?
No that's not true. The flower of the orange tree has five-ray symmetry, and each nest in the ovary is divided in two. All of these halves develop into slices, so you end up with 10 pieces. However, in some fruits, the lobules may further divide in two, and usually one of the resulting lobules is much smaller than the other.
The "umbilical" varieties have several very small lobules at the top of the fruit.
